Set up points rules

Create points rules to define how members earn points in your Loyalty rewards program.

Written by Bartlomiej Rekosiewicz

Points rules let you reward members for specific actions, such as purchases, sign-ups, and social engagement. You can tailor each rule to match your member tiers and program design. This ensures rewards align with your business model, encourage engagement, and reflect your points strategy.

Before you start

Before you create a points rule, make sure you’ve completed the following:

  • Have defined your points and rewards strategy, including point value and overall economics, before creating rules.

  • Decide which member actions to reward.

  • Understand how each rule type works and when to use it.

Available rule types

You can create rules for the following actions:

  • Purchase points
Award points based on how much a member spends, with point values configurable per tier.

  • Email subscribe
This is a one-time rule that awards points when a member subscribes to your marketing emails.
Members can only earn this reward once, and points are available immediately.

  • SMS subscribe

Members can only earn this reward once, and points are available immediately.

    • Yotpo reviews
Award points when members leave product reviews through Yotpo, with optional limits on how often points can be earned.

View your rules

Your rules are displayed in Program > Rules. The rules view provide the following information:

  • Rule description – name of the rule.

  • Rule type – type of rule, for example, purchase points or welcome bonus.

  • Status – active or inactive.

  • Tiers – applicable member tiers.

  • Last updated – date last changed.

  • Delete – remove rule.

You can filter the rules by Status and Tier.

Add a point rule

Each rule type follows the same initial setup, then there are specific steps for each rule type.

  1. Go to Program > Rules.

  2. Select Add point rule.

  3. Choose a rule type from the menu and select Add.

  4. Set Rule settings:

    • Status – use the toggle to activate or deactivate the rule. You can leave it off and activate it later.

    • Name – enter a clear name, such as Points for social following or Points for joining.

    • Image – select Choose file to upload an image.
This image appears in your Shopify store when using our app blocks, or through our API for custom storefronts.

  5. Set Active period to control when your points rule is active, such as for scheduled promotions or limited-time earning campaigns.

    1. Start date

      • Right now - the rule begins as soon as it’s saved.

      • Choose a date - choose a specific date and time for the rule to start.

    2. End date

      • No end date - the rule stays active until you disable or delete it.

      • Choose a date - select when the rule should automatically stop being active.

  6. Continue with configuration for the rule type you selected below.

Deleting a rule does not affect member points already earned. You can see the deleted rule in Analytics > Activity.

Rule types

This section explains how to configure the details of each rule type and assign points based on member tiers.

Purchase points

  1. Set Rule settings and Active period as described under Add point rule.

  2. Set Points details:

    1. Define how many points members earn for every unit of currency spent in each tier.

  3. Set Products and collections:

    1. Select one of the following:

      • Include all - the rule applies to all products and collections.

      • Exclude - the rule applies to all items except those you specify.

      • Include only - the rule applies only to the selected products and collections.

  4. If you select Exclude or Include only, you can choose specific products, variants, or collections to target:

    1. Select Add products and variants to select individual items.

    2. Select Add collections to select collections.

Custom

A Custom rule lets you define how many points members earn when the rule is triggered by Shopify Flow.

Unlike other points rules, a Custom rule does not run automatically. It is designed to be triggered through the Loyalty action block in Shopify Flow, which controls when the rule runs.

Use a Custom rule when you want to award points for actions or conditions that aren’t covered by standard Loyalty rule types.

Custom rules define how many points are awarded. Shopify Flow defines when points are awarded.

  1. Set Rule settings and Active period as described under Add point rule.

  2. Go to Rules and select the rule you just created.
The rule has now its Rule ID.

  3. Select Copy code to use it in Earn points block in Shopify Flow.

Bonus and social engagement

For the following rule types:

  • Welcome bonus

  • Birthday bonus

  • Anniversary bonus

  • Facebook page like

  • Instagram follow

  • X follow

  • TikTok follow

Follow these steps:

  1. Set Rule settings and Active period as described under Add point rule.

  2. Set Points details.
Learn how to define tiers in Set up member tiers.

  3. Select Save rule.
Your rule is added to the Rules table.

Yotpo Reviews

You can only create a Yotpo Reviews points rule if the Yotpo integration has been connected in Loyalty. Make sure the integration settings are configured before starting this setup.

To prevent excessive review submissions in a short period, you can limit how often points are awarded for reviews. For example, you might allow a maximum of two rewarded reviews per week. By default, the frequency limit is set to one review per month.

  1. Set the rule settings as described above, and decide if you want to Limit earning frequency.

Toggle the button to Yes or No.

  2. If you select Yes, enter the maximum frequency and choose the time range from the drop-down menu (day, week, month, or year).

  3. Under Active date range, set the Start date and End date:

    • For Start date, choose Right now to make the rule active immediately, or Choose a date to set a future start using the date picker.

    • For End date, choose No end date to keep the rule active indefinitely, or select a specific date when the rule should become inactive.

  4. Under Points details, define how many points members earn for leaving a review in each tier.
Learn how to define tiers in Set up member tiers.

  5. Select Save rule.
Your rule is added to the Rules table.

Double points earning rule

You can set up multiple earning rules of the same type to give members extra points when they meet certain conditions.
If a member qualifies for more than one rule, their points are combined, allowing double or triple rewards for the same activity.

For example, if you have two points for purchase rules:

  • One rule rewards 1 point for each pound spent.

  • Another rule rewards 2 points for each pound spent.

If a member meets the conditions for both rules, they’ll earn 3 points for each pound they spend.

Create a double points earning rule

To create a double points rule, set up more than one points earning rule of the same type. When a member meets the conditions for these rules, their points will be added together, giving them double or even triple points for their activity.
