Loyalty program enrollment and membership status

Learn how loyalty program enrollment works and how it affects what customers can see and do in your Shopify storefront.

Written by Bartlomiej Rekosiewicz

Loyalty enrollment determines whether a customer is an active member of your loyalty program.

When a customer is enrolled, they can earn points, redeem rewards, and access member‑only loyalty features. When they’re not enrolled, they can see information about the program but can’t participate in it.

Enrollment setting exist to give merchants control over when customers become loyalty program members and how they join it.

Member status overview

A customer’s loyalty program experience depends on their membership status.

You can view a member’s enrollment status in:

  • Members > select a member > Program activity
To remove a member from the loyalty program, select Unenroll.

  • Members
Check the Status column in the table.

The table below explains each loyalty program membership status and how it affects the customer experience and analytics.

What changes when a customer enrolls?

When a customer enrolls, they gain full access to your loyalty program. They can earn points, redeem rewards, and see member‑only loyalty program content. Their activity is also included in loyalty analytics and reporting.

If a customer unenrolls, their loyalty membership ends and loyalty features are no longer available.

Automatic enrollment setting

Enrollment is controlled by the Automatic enrollment setting in Loyalty.

  • Automatic enrollment: On (default)
Customers are enrolled in your loyalty program automatically when they create a customer account. Enrolled customers can earn points, redeem rewards, and access member‑only loyalty features.

  • Automatic enrollment: Off
Creating a customer account does not enroll customers in your loyalty program. Customers must enroll manually, for example, through the Enrollment block in your storefront or during checkout. Until they enroll, they can see information about the program but can’t earn points or redeem rewards.

Switching Automatic enrollment on or off can affect how existing customers appear in Loyalty, for example, whether they show as enrolled or not enrolled.

Enrollment options

If Automatic enrollment is Off, customers can join the loyalty program from your storefront or during checkout. If Automatic enrollment is On, customers are enrolled automatically when they create an account.

Customers can join the loyalty program in two places.

The Enrollment block invites customers to join the loyalty program from your storefront.

  • It displays a Join now button.

    The button text is customizable.

  • The block appears for logged‑in customers who aren’t enrolled yet.
We recommend that you include a link to your loyalty terms and conditions near the block, for example, By joining, you agree to our Terms and Conditions.

Once a customer enrolls, the Enrollment block is no longer shown.

Customers who aren’t enrolled can also join the loyalty program during checkout.

  • A checkbox appears near the order summary.

  • When the customer selects the checkbox and completes the purchase, they’re enrolled automatically.
