Get started with Loyalty

Build and manage loyalty programs that turn one-time buyers into repeat customers.

Written by Gareth Burroughes

Loyalty is a comprehensive loyalty platform that connects with your Shopify store and Dotdigital Marketing account to create a unified customer engagement experience.

What Loyalty does

  • Build loyalty programs
Encourage members to return by earning points for transactional and behavioral activities.

  • Create rewards
Members can redeem rewards using their points to claim fixed amount discounts, percentage discounts, free shipping coupons, and free product rewards.

  • Manage member profiles
Detailed views of each member's points balance, earning history, purchase data, and program activity.

  • Set up tiered membership programs
Segment your customers and reward them with exclusive benefits based on their points accumulation.

  • Track program performance
Analytics showing points earned, redemption rates, popular rewards, member growth, and more.

  • Automate email notifications
Keep members engaged with welcome messages, points notifications, reward reminders, and expiry warnings.

  • Leverage loyalty data for marketing
Sync member information to Dotdigital Marketing for targeted campaigns and segmentation.

Points

Members earn points through actions you define as points rules in your Dotdigital Loyalty program:

  • Purchase points
Award points based on order value. You set the conversion rate, for example, 1 point per $1 spent.

  • Welcome bonus
Give new members one-time bonus points when they join your program.

  • Birthday gift
Reward members with bonus points on their birthday.

  • Member anniversary
Celebrate loyalty by awarding points on the anniversary of when they joined.

  • Subscription engagement
Reward members for subscribing to your marketing channels, including email and SMS.

  • Social media engagement
Reward members for interacting with your brand on social channels, including Facebook, Instagram, X, and TikTok.

  • Custom activities
Award points for actions triggered through Shopify Flow workflows and custom rules.

  • Product reviews
Reward members for leaving product reviews through supported integrations such as Yotpo Reviews.

Points are calculated on merchandise value only. Tax and shipping don't earn points. When members use vouchers, they earn points on the net amount after the discount is applied.

Redeem points

Members can redeem their earned points for rewards you've created.

When members redeem:

  • Points are deducted from their balance.

  • A unique Shopify discount code is generated automatically.

  • The reward matches your configured reward settings, including discount amount, discount percentage, free shipping, or free product eligibility.

  • Members receive email confirmation and can use the code at checkout. Coupon codes are also visible on the customer’s loyalty page.

Points adjustments

You can manually add or remove points from member accounts when needed, for example, for member service situations, special promotions, or corrections. All adjustments are logged in the Activity with the reason you provide.

Refunds and points

When orders are refunded, points are adjusted as:

  • Partial refunds
Deduct points earned from refunded merchandise. Loyalty points are not returned.

  • Complete refunds
Adjust all points. Both merchandise points are deducted, and voucher points are returned to the member.

Rewards

Rewards are what members redeem their points for. They're the reward that motivates participation.

Types of rewards

  • Fixed amount discount coupons
Give members a specific dollar amount off, for example, 500 points = $5 off.

  • Percentage discount coupons
Offer a percentage off their order, for example, 1,000 points = 15% off.

  • Free shipping coupons
Remove shipping costs from the order.

  • Free product rewards
Allow members to redeem points for a specific product from your Shopify store.

Reward settings

For each reward you set up, you can define:

  • Points required
How many points members need to redeem it.

  • Minimum purchase
Optional threshold members must reach to use the reward.

  • Tier availability
Which tiers can access this reward, useful for exclusive benefits.

  • Status
Turn rewards on or off without deleting them.

Discounts apply to the order subtotal before shipping and taxes are added.

Tiers

Tiers are membership levels that reward your most engaged members with enhanced benefits.

Setting up tiers

You can create up to four custom tiers with names that are meaningful to your brand. For each tier, you define:

  • Points needed
The threshold members must reach to qualify.

  • Qualification method
Members can qualify based on points earned, total spend, or number of orders placed, depending on how the tier system is configured.

  • Evaluation period
Choose whether the tier status is reviewed every 12 months or based on lifetime points.

Tier benefits

Different tiers can offer:

  • Different points multipliers, for example, 1x for basic, 1.25x for silver, 1.5x for gold.

  • Tier-specific reward costs make rewards cheaper for higher tiers.

  • Exclusive rewards that are only available to certain tiers.

Members are upgraded or downgraded between tiers based on their points activity during the evaluation period.

Members

Members are customers who have joined your loyalty program and can earn and redeem points.

Loyalty enrollment controls when customers become members and what they can do in your program.

Member profiles

Each member profile shows:

  • Personal details
    Name, email, mobile number, birthday.

  • Program activity
Join date, current tier, rewards claimed, subscription status.

  • Points information
Current balance, total earned, total redeemed, expiry dates.

  • Activity history
Complete record of points earned, points redeemed, purchases, and tier changes.

  • Recent activity
Last time they earned points, redeemed points, or made a purchase.

Managing members

In the members area, you can search and filter members by:

  • Name or email

  • Points balance, including equal to, greater than, less than, or between

  • Tier level

  • Join date

You can also export member data for analysis or use in other tools.

Integration with Dotdigital Marketing

Loyalty works hand in hand with your Marketing account to enhance your campaigns.

Data sync

Loyalty automatically syncs member data to Marketing, including:

  • Date joined

  • Points balance

  • Awarded points total

  • Redeemed points total

  • Points next expiration date

  • Tier name

  • Birthday date

  • Member status, enrolled or not.

  • Current points balance.

  • Points earned and redeemed history.

  • Current tier level.

  • Program engagement metrics.

  • Reward redemption history.

This data appears in Marketing as standard contact data fields, which you can use for segmentation and personalisation.

Email templates

Loyalty includes pre-built email notification templates that live in Marketing but are triggered by Loyalty app events:

  • Welcome email
Sent when someone joins the program.

  • Points earned
Notifies members when they earn points.

  • Reward confirmation
    Confirms successful redemptions.

  • Points expiry warning
    Reminds members before points expire.

You can edit these templates directly in Marketing while turning them on or off in the Loyalty app. Each template can be customised to match your brand voice and includes dynamic content such as points balances and available rewards.

Segmentation and targeting in Dotdigital Marketing

Use loyalty data in Marketing to segment your members:

  • Target members close to reward thresholds.

  • Re-engage members who haven't earned points recently.

  • Create VIP campaigns for top-tier members.

  • Celebrate tier upgrades.

  • Encourage redemptions when balances are high.
