Create multiple tiers to reward members as their engagement with your brand grows. Members progress upwards through tiers as they meet the qualification criteria you define.
Learn more about points in Get started with Loyalty.
You can choose whether to re-evaluate tier membership annually, or whether it’s based on lifetime points.
Using tiers, you can:
Assign points multipliers so higher‑tier members earn points faster
Restrict rewards to specific tiers
Set different point costs for rewards per tier
Create tier system
Select the Account menu icon and go to Settings > Tiers.
The tier creation wizard opens automatically.
1. Configure basic settings
In this step, choose how members qualify for tiers and how tier membership is evaluated.
Tier qualification method
Select one qualification method for the entire tier system:
Points‑based
Members qualify based on the number of points they’ve earned.
Spend‑based
Members qualify based on how much they’ve spent.
Number of orders placed
Members qualify based on how many orders they’ve placed.
You can also define conditions such as a minimum order value when configuring tiers.
Tier evaluation period
Choose how often tier membership is evaluated:
Every 12 months
Tier membership is re‑evaluated every 12 months from the start date of your tier system.
Members can move up or down tiers based on whether they still meet the qualification requirements.
Lifetime
Tier membership is based on lifetime qualification values.
Members typically move upwards through tiers and are not re‑evaluated on a fixed schedule. In some cases, tier membership may change if underlying qualification values are adjusted, for example due to refunds.
Include points from
This setting applies when using points‑based tier qualification.
Choose which points are included when evaluating tiers:
All time
Custom start date
Select Save and continue.
Selecting Save saves your progress so you can return later.
2. Configure standard tiers
You can configure up to four standard tiers.
For each tier, enter:
Name
Qualification value
The value required to reach the tier, based on the selected qualification method, for example, points earned, spend amount, or number of orders.
Members start in the lowest tier and progress upwards as they meet each tier’s qualification value.
To add another standard tier, select + Add tier.
3. Add a VIP tier
You can add a VIP tier, which is always positioned as the final tier in the system.
The VIP tier is different from standard tiers because qualification is based on a Shopify customer tag, not points or orders.
When a customer qualifies for the VIP tier, it overrides standard tier progression.
VIP tier membership is controlled entirely by Shopify customer tags.
Select + Add VIP tier.
Configure the following:
Name
Shopify tag
Enter a Shopify customer tag that already exists in your store.
Customers with this tag are automatically given VIP status.
Select Save and continue to continue.
4. Activate tier system
After reviewing your tier setup, select Activate.
In the confirmation modal, review the information and select Activate to make the tier system live.
If you’re not ready to activate yet, select Cancel.
Example of tier progression with a VIP tier
For example, a points‑based tier system might look like this:
Tier 1: Freshly onboard - 0 points
Tier 2: Returning customer - 500 points
Tier 3: Loyal customer - 1,500 points
Tier 4: Brand champion - 3,000 points
VIP tier: VIPs - Shopify tag VIP
Members progress through the standard tiers as they earn points.
If a customer is given the VIP tag in Shopify, they move directly into the VIP tier regardless of their points balance.
View and manage tiers
Once your tier system is active, you can view and manage it from the Tiers settings menu.
Select the Account menu icon and go to Settings > Tiers to:
View all tiers and their qualification requirements
See how many members are in each tier
